Voroshk flying post
From Glen Cook Wiki
The Voroshk are a large family of powerful sorcerers who inhabit the world where Khatovar was located. The flying post, or rheitgeistiden, is a powerful but fairly common item among the members of the family. It resembles a long, thick fencepost, with small levers on top. They are very maneuverable and, unlike the related flying carpets of the Taken, they do not require much concentration or even magical skill to use. They can in fact be set on autopilot, programmed to return to a given destination if the rider is incapacitated. The flying posts are also equipped with very powerful self-destruct enchantments. They are also capable of hurling small fireballs.
The posts are a sign of privilege and the Voroshk family rides them everywhere in public. The Company captures a few during a brief foray to the land of Khatovar, and the Company wizard Tobo later unravels the secrets of their operation. The enchantments are closely related to those of the flying carpets.
The self-destruct spells are so powerful that the Company uses them as weapons, once to destroy the Khatovar shadowgate and once to destroy Kina.
