From Glen Cook Wiki
Hi! Thanks for contributing to the Glen Cook WIki. Please keep in mind these suggestions when adding content:
- When adding or editing pages regarding Geography (places, cities, private homes, countries, etc), please try to include as much information as may be gleaned from the text about relationships with other locales - distance, direction, etc - as we would like to supliment the content here with maps of the worlds described. I have seen some existing maps of the world that the Black Company books take place in, but would like to create versions for this site and expand upon existing knowledge.
- When adding or editing any article, please include the Category information. Current categories are:
- Books
- Characters
- Events
- Geography
- Groups
- History
- Expand on these as you see fit.
- If you need help with the Wiki codes, either browse the source of existing articles, or check out MediaWiki User's Guide - specifically, the section 'For Editors'. If all else fails, feel free to contact me on my Talk page! Guru Buckaroo 16:40, 13 February 2006 (CST)
Dude, seriously, you rock. Thank you so much for the effort you're putting into the content here. This is what I originally intended this site to be like - and I've just never had the time to enter as much as I would like to. I'm more of a fan of the Garrett series than the Black Company - I've only read the first 3 BC books - so I'm delighted to have someone who can write so well contributing. If I can get to Archon this fall, I'll see if I can get you an Autograph, if you would like one. Mr. Cook has signed all of my Garrett books, and I want to try to get an interview this year (crossing fingers). Thanks again! Guru Buckaroo 02:14, 18 February 2006 (CST)
- Thanks for setting up the wiki in the first place. Your offer is very kind - an autograph would be great. I don't pretend to be the most knowledgable about the BC series but I hope to lay enough of a groundwork for others to improve.
- The first 3 books are a great trilogy. There are some weaker books as the series progresses but overall I think it's surprisingly strong and coherent, and the deep south series doesn't get nearly enough credit among Cook fans. I suspect it's because the characters everyone likes in the first 3 books mostly die. But Cook has noted that the real character is the Company itself, and I think he deserves a lot more credit overall than he's gotten.
- I do have one functional question. When you do a search for a nonexistent article, this wiki doesn't ask if you want to create a new page for the term in question - only way I have found to create a new page is to add a link in an existing page, then follow that link. Is there an easier way to create new pages?
- If you do a search for a term, and it doesn't exist, you can click on the link text 'this exact title' on the search results page, and it will give you a new black page with that title. Guru Buckaroo 17:04, 18 February 2006 (CST)
Thanks for the help. More articles to come!
Man, you don't sleep much, do you? You are seriously exceeding my expectations for a contributor! I can't thank you enough, really. Now I just need to convince you to read the Garrett series and add all the stuff that I've never gotten around to :> Guru Buckaroo 19:19, 23 February 2006 (CST)
OK - see the article Annalist for the new category layout. Characters should be in the category for their group as well as the series. Once all of the titles listed by the "List of characters" page are converted, I'll delete the page - since the Category system is so much more automatic, and provides basically the same function. Do you by any chance have a gmail/Google Talk account? I'm getting ready to do some software updates, and would like to be able to chat to let you know when. If you do, my gtalk id is gurubuckaroo (at) gmail / dot / com (de-obfuscate as necessary). Guru Buckaroo 23:22, 2 March 2006 (CST)
Can I have you do one more adjustment for me? When you put a category entry in for any page that starts with "The", or any character with first and last names, could you modify the Category link as such: or - that way, the article will appear in the Category page indexed by the correct alphabetical order. For instance, currently, "The Salient" appears under T - but with , it will appear under S (and properly ordered for "Salient". It will still show the name used in the article, but will sort it according to the data after the |. Thanks! Guru Buckaroo 22:59, 7 March 2006 (CST)
