Syndic

The ruler of Beryl at the outset of the series. He is described as a small, dusky man with a beaklike nose. His position is somewhat untenable, which is why he hired the Black Company to guard him. However, the Company decides, in a rare abdication of duty, to let the Syndic be assassinated, as they believe defending him is a lost cause and not worth the loss of the Company. He is supposedly killed by a forvalaka, but actually The Captain of the Company finds the Syndic survived the attack. Match finishes the job.
