Stormbringer (a.k.a. Stormshadow) is one of the Ten Who Were Taken. She is one of only three female Taken, along with Soulcatcher and either Nightcrawler or Moonbiter (the books don't specify which). There is little description of Stormbringer in the books, other than her diminutive physical appearance. She wears a mask of some kind. Her specialty is weather magic; she is capable of creating or shaping enormous weather systems. At one point, she creates gale-force winds for days on end to help cover the retreat of the Black Company when they are heading to the fortress at Charm.

History

The Company first meets Stormbringer during a raid to kill the Rebel wizard Harden. During the battle, one of the four Taken present (The Hanged Man) receives a fatal wound to the head. Stormbringer and Soulcatcher overrule Shapeshifter, who wants to help The Hanged Man. Her weather magic is seen again from time to time, but the Company does not encounter her personally again until the Battle of Charm, where she reportedly perished. The Lady tells Croaker that the Dominator was able to reach out from the Barrowland and influence the female Taken, so presumably Stormbringer was conspiring with Soulcatcher to release the Dominator.

In fact, she faked her death and headed out of the Northern Empire altogether. She travelled to the far south and re-established herself using the name Stormshadow, allying herself with three other Shadowmasters seeking to capitalize on the power available from the Shadowgate. She built a fortress at the city of Dejagore named Stormgard. However, after a few decades in her new identity, she was tracked down by Shapeshifter, who used The Lady to find her and coordinate a military campaign to conquer Stormgard. Stormbringer and Shapeshifter exhausted each other fighting (largely because Soulcatcher was using magic to secretly strengthen Stormbringer so the fight would be even). Afterwards, the Company knocked them both out and killed them by sewing up their eyes, mouths, fingers and other orifices, and then burning them.
