Regional detail of Plain of Fear, in the Northern Empire.

The Plain of Fear is the home of Old Father Tree. It is a barren desert for the most part, hundreds of miles in diameter, populated by distinctly bizarre and often dangerous flora and fauna found nowhere else. The predominant colors are reds and browns, rust, ochre, blood- and wine-shaded sandstones like the bluffs, with here and there the random stratum of orange. These include talking menhirs, windwhales, venomous land coral, backwards centaur-like creatures, and flying mantas. There are supposedly forty-odd intelligent species native to the Plain, most of which are hostile to travelers. The menhirs, the most talkative of the Plain's creatures, are particularly cruel and find giving travelers fatally wrong directions quite funny.

The Plain is also home to a peculiar weather phenomenon, the Change Storm, which is a magical storm that seems to randomly transform things in its path.

All of the odd creatures and phenomena native to the Plain are the result of Father Tree's presence. He is a god summoned from another dimension in a past age to imprison a mighty and dangerous dark lord beneath his roots. His summoning devastated the area later known as the Plain of Fear, and then he populated it with creatures from his home dimension.

The Rebels have their home base in the middle of the Plain, benefiting from an alliance with the creatures of the Plain and, later, Old Father Tree himself.
