The general theme and plot of the book draws heavily from "Das Boot", the World War II classic about a German journalist embedded with a U-Boat crew.

In addition, the strategic situation of the beseiged planet Caanan is very similar to the siege of the Mediterranean island of Malta from 1940 to 1942. Like Caanan, Malta was a relative backwater at the start of the war, and quickly became an isolated pocket of fortified Allied territory. From that pocket, Allied (mainly British) submarines and bombers ranged out to attack Axis shipping, while the the population of the island itself endured a critical shortage of supplies and near-daily bombardment. Unlike Caanan, however, the Allies never lost control of Malta.
