The Lieutenant is the second in command of the Black Company; several people hold this job throughout the series (including Lady) but, as with the Captain, there is an otherwise nameless man who holds the job at the outset of the series and is primarily identified with the role. He's a hardcore, professional mercenary with little humor, although he is a firm traditionalist (even more so than Croaker). He lugs a huge blade that is "damn near an executioner's sword". In his youth, he sailed ships as a cabin boy. He excels at planning sieges, and the siege of the Black Castle is described by Croaker as the Company's most massive undertaking in his memory.

He is a capable military leader, but not as popular as the Captain. Nonetheless when the Captain is killed following the Company's flight from Juniper and the Lady's service, the Lieutenant is elected to replace him. Croaker doesn't really like him, but accepts that the Lieutenant is the logical man for the job.

The Lieutenant leads the Black Company for years as the backbone of the Rebel forces, though the White Rose (Darling) is the overall commander of the Rebels and an excellent general in her own right. One of the Company's best fighters, he is killed by the Dominator at the final Barrowland battle, along with Elmo and most of the Company.
