Jewel Cities

A small group of cities along the coast of the Sea of Torments, including Opal, Beryl, and possibly a few others with similar names. They are often referred to collectively and seem to share a common language and culture. Of the two named in the series, Beryl is older, called the "Queen of the Jewel Cities", filled with centuries of history. Opal is described as a "younger, fresher Beryl". By the third book, all the Jewel Cities appear to be possessions of the Northern Empire.
