The Northern Empire is a somewhat challenging territory to define. Overall it is approximately two thousand miles north to south and perhaps 3,000 to 3,500 miles east to west; however its borders are never clearly defined and in any event the Empire continues its expansion throughout the first three books, extending its borders south of the Sea of Torments by 300 miles between the first book and the third. Lady builds carefully and her empire resembles that of ancient Rome in some ways. At the heart of the Empire, former kingdoms such as Forsberg become provinces. At the outskirts, kingdoms maintain a patina of autonomy (e.g. the kingdom of Tally, and in some border provinces (such as Karsus) local militia are employed instead of Imperial troops. This model closely approximates the one used by the Roman Empire at its height.

This category includes all locations which are definitively part of the Northern Empire at one point or another.
