The Captain

There are several captains of the Black Company during the series, including Croaker, Lady, Murgen, Sleepy, and Suvrin. But the first Captain in the series, whose name is never revealed, is the Company's leader for the duration of the original novel (The Black Company) and its second book Shadows Linger. A 'romantic' of sorts, whose closed personality means he is an enigma to all but perhaps Raven. He was born in the Jewel Cities and worked as a professional soldier until something overturned his life (Croaker guesses possibly a woman). He abandoned his commissions and title and joined with the Company.

Dies after the destruction of Juniper when he steals one of the flying carpets and crashes it into the ocean in attempting to reach the Company. Since only a wizard can fly the carpets, it appears that the Captain must have had a hint of magical talent, never before revealed or discussed in the books. He also understood immediately the significance of Raker's captured hairs, lending further support to this theory.
