Annals

The Annals are the documents containing the history of the Black Company. They are maintained by the Annalist. They are organized into books, which seem to be regular parchment codices. The Annals fill a small wagon. This may be because the languages used by the Company change, and older books are translated into newer languages as needed. In general, the books seem to be organized by Annalist, though some appear to contain entries from several Annalists and to bear the name of something or someone else. The system isn't very clear or consistent.

Early Books of the Annals

  • Book of the Company (the first one; written in an antique Nyueng Bao dialect, from the Land of Unknown Shadows)
  • First and second Books of Odrick (the second and third books; written in an antique Taglian dialect, but using the Nyueng Bao alphabet)
  • Book of Te-Lare (long lost, but a copy is found in the Temple of Travelers Repose); tells the story of how the first three books were lost in battle at the end of the first century of the Company's history)
  • Book of Kette (set down early in the second century of the Company's history; Annalists Lees, Agrip, Holm, and Straw contributed. Describes the Company in service to the Paingod of Cho'n Delor.)
  • Book of Choe (originally destroyed 50 years before Croaker joined, copy found in the Temple of Travelers Repose)
  • Book of Skete (long lost, copy found in the Temple of Travelers Repose)
  • Book of Cloete (quoted in Dreams of Steel: "In those days the Company was in service to the Syndarchs of Dai Khomena, and they were delivered...")
  • Book of Set (Annalist Coral; company in service to the Archon of Bone during the Revolt of the Chiliarchs)
  • Book of Woeg (company nearly destroyed, down to 104 men after fighting along the Bake, in Norssele)

Later Books of the Annals

  • Books of Croaker/Books of the North
  • Book of Lady
  • Book of Murgen
  • Book of Sleepy
