Angry Lead Skies
From Glen Cook Wiki
From the Back Cover
Anyone else would have learned by now: When trouble comes knocking, don't open the door.
There's a reason why Garrett's still in the P.I. business after all these years - he's not one to learn his lessons. Maybe that's why he lets himself get roped into being a bodyguard for Kip Prose, an obnoxious kid being threatened by creatures that can't quite be described.
According to the kid, the attackers aren't after him at all - they're just trying to get to his friends Lastyr and Noodiss. But before Garrett can get Kip to explain just who or what Lastyr and Noodiss are, Kip is abducted, and the chase begins....
Notes
This book differs significantly from the previous entries in the series in tone, style, details of the setting, and overall quality. Some differences offer puzzling breaks in continuity (such as the sudden ability of the grolls to speak the common tongue, after having required a translator in the previous books). The antagonists are implausible as well given the previously established parameters of the setting. The reasons for this are unclear; there are some suggestive lapses in continuity in the later Black Company books which indicate that Cook may not be opposed to retconning his settings to fit the evolving narrative; alternatively, he may have collaborated with a ghost writer on this entry. Whatever the cause, those new to the Garrett books are strongly advised not to begin with this atypical entry in the series.
